WHAT IS RSS?

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary. It is a means of providing summaries of news, blogs, forums or website content to a site's visitors, without requiring them to constantly revisit the site to check if the news section has been updated.

HOW DO I USE IT?

Visitors can use an RSS reader (such as the free FeedReader) to collect their favourite feeds in one centralized program. Modern browsers like Firefox 2, Internet Explorer 7 and Safari can also subscribe to and monitor RSS feeds - click the feed icon in the Updates column and the browser will present an option screen. Personalised home pages available from Google, Yahoo and MSN allow RSS feeds chosen by the user to be displayed - enabling the user to fill the page with content that is of interest to him or her, rather than that shown by default.

If you are not using the latest version of Firefox, Internet Explorer or Safari or you wish to read subscribed feeds elsewhere than in your browser, you can subscribe by cutting and pasting - the precise method depends on the browser you are using:

Internet Explorer:
Select the web address below and copy it to the clipboard (Control-c on PC / Command-c on Mac):

http://www.enterprise-heritage.co.uk/newsfeed.xml

This web address can then be pasted into your chosen feed reader - see 'Adding a feed' in the documentation for the precise method, which will vary between applications.

Firefox:
The technique above will also work for Firefox. An additional method for Firefox users is to right-click (PC) / control-click (Mac) the feed icon and select 'Copy link location' or 'Copy link to clipboard'.

Safari:
The method described for Internet Explorer will also work in Safari. Additionally, Safari users can control-click the feed icon and select 'Copy link'.

Once subscribed, every time the user opens his RSS reader application or visits his personalised homepage, the feed is checked for new content and the display is updated. The user retains control as he can unsubscribe at any time and with immediate effect by simply removing the feed from where he is viewing it.
